This past Tuesday, I traveled to Ozark, AR, to visit Ozark Primary School. Starlie-Belle, who I met just over a year ago, asked me to come give my “skin cancer” presentation to her classroom. The great thing about MAPP is it can be molded to fit any age level. She’s in third grade, so I chose to bring along the book, “Hey! Don’t Forget the Sunscreen,” as an illustration. For the younger groups, I have several books on different reading and comprehension levels I use to really get the point across to them. The book took us on a journey through skin cancer prevention after Sally learned why her friends aunt had a bandage on her nose. I was able to teach the children the 5 S’s to skin cancer prevention on a level they understood so they could put them into practice. My presentation took place during snack time. Starlie-Belle’s platform is H.U.G.S. standing for Hunger is Universal, Get Served. She brought everyone snacks and an awareness bracelet while I gave my presentation. She even volunteers monthly at a local homeless shelter to serve food and donates to her local Rotary’s “blessing box” regularly. She’s a special little girl that’s already doing big things to make a difference in other people’s lives! You go girl, and thank you for inviting me to your class. It was truly a pleasure. Any day that I can travel to a new location and educate others on skin cancer prevention is a good day!
